Last year, we gave Yarn Crawlers an opportunity to knit for Refuge, and the response was overwhelming! We are thrilled to be collecting charity knitting again this year at the Pop-Up Marketplace. However, this time around, Refuge has maxed out their storage capacity for handknitting donations, so Knit for Peace has stepped in to the breech to find homes for all your handknit goodies.
If you don't know about Knit for Peace, here's a brief rundown of their activities. Knit for Peace is an initiative of the Charities Advisory Trust, and grew out of projects that were developed in Rwanda and India, which brought together women of traditionally hostile communities (Hutu and Tutsi war widows in Rwanda and Muslim and Hindu women in the slums of Delhi) to knit clothes for street children and orphans. The knitters were paid, and the clothes were distributed through local NGOs. Soon after, knitters in the UK asked if they could knit for those in need, and Knit for Peace has been inundated with knitted items ever since.
Knit for Peace believes that knitting is good for people in all sorts of ways. Knitting brings people together and gives a way of helping others in need, providing benefits both to the knitter and the recipient. They distribute donated knits through more then 80 outlets, including hospitals, women’s refuges, refugee drop in centres, prisons, community groups, and hospices as well as to developing countries.
There's a great page of patterns on the Knit for Peace website if you want to do some charity knitting and don't have any projects in mind. We will be collecting all charity knitting at the ticket table at the entrance to the Main Hall in Chelsea Old Town Hall next Saturday. And just like last year, every knitted item donated will receive one entry into our Grand Prize Raffle for a basket full of yarn from Skein Queen, SweetGeorgia Yarns, Rainbow Heirloom and Rowan/Coats. There will also be goodies from Soak and Chiaogoo.
If you don't have the time or inclination to knit for charity, you can still enter the raffle on the day at the Marketplace. Raffle tickets will be £1 per ticket, or £5 for 6 tickets. All monies raised by the raffle will go directly to Refuge.
The drawing will be held at the end of the day on Saturday (approximately 6:00 pm), and you do not have to be present to win. Be sure to put your name and phone number or email address on the back of your tickets, and we will be in touch to ship the prize out to you after the event. Happy knitting!
