The Handweavers Studio and Gallery has been a London institution since 1973, providing supplies for weavers, spinners and dyers in Finsbury Park. Originally located in Walthamstow, Handweavers has spent the last 10 years on Seven Sisters Road, providing a haven of colour and texture for all.
The heart and soul of the shop is its extensive history in weaving, with shelves full of coned yarns of all fibre and weights ready to be transformed into unique fabrics, and looms and weaving classes galore. In addition to yarns, Handweavers has the largest selection of spinning fibre of any of the shops in the Great London Yarn Crawl, along with wheels, carding and combing equipment and dyes for anyone looking to create their own custom colourways.
Unlike most of the other shops included on the GLYC, the yarns at Handweavers are primarily sourced for weaving, not knitting or crochet, although they can be used for a wide variety of projects. Yarns range from chunky handspun Shetland to superfine silks and cottons, and cover almost every fibre you can imagine.
If you’re intrigued by the idea of branching out from needle and hook-based yarn crafts, they’ve got everything you’ll need to get started on your weaving adventure, from rigid heddle, tapestry and floor looms to an extensive library of books to expand your horizons.
Spinners will find a wide range of naturally coloured fibre to explore, including Bluefaced Leicester, Finnish, Hebridean and Shetland, as well as an interesting array of crosses to experiment with. Alongside the undyed fibre you’ll also find multicoloured merino and silk tops, a variety of plant fibers, alpaca, mohair, cashmere and llama. Top whorl, bottom whorl and Turkish spindles are available if you’re not picking up a new Ashford wheel. Take advantage of the 5% discount being offered to Yarn Crawlers on yarns, fibre and drop spindles with your passport!
Handweavers also offer a wide range of classes for all manner of fibre crafts, with single and multiday workshops. They also run three 10 week weaving classes for all levels of weavers from beginner to experienced, as well as a two year Handweavers Diploma course for anyone wanting to develop their weaving skills to a new level.
Make sure a visit to Handweavers Studio is on your GLYC 2019 plans - their unique background and experience make for a wonderful complement to the other shops of the Yarn Crawl. Don’t miss out!
