Every year we look forward to the Great London Yarn Crawl, wondering what special things the shops will be doing. Occasionally over the years it has been gutting to hear of a yarn shop closing but always joyful to hear of a new shop opening. So as sad as we were to learn that Fringe 108 was closing, we were delighted to hear that it would be reborn under new ownership as Slipstitch.
New owner Rosie took over Fringe in January 2019. She’d been working in the shop since the previous year and when it came up for sale decided to give it a go!
We asked Rosie what she’s hoping to achieve with the shop:
“My main aim for the shop is to make it the kind of place I’d like to visit. I want to make it a place you’re guaranteed a warm welcome. My first move when taking over was to get a sofa for the shop and that has been a big hit, as has the new kettle! The shop is full of bright colours and yarns you can come and squish and play with and I’m working on making sure there are great yarns across the price spectrum. But the best thing about the shop is the staff I inherited with it! They’re all expert makers and crafters and we’re always happy to help you with a knitting conundrum.”
New lines that Slipstitch have added include DROPS Yarn - the only shop in London where you can find it in person! They’ve started with five lines and hope to add more soon. Other favourite new products include needle felting kits from Harthorn Handmade. Other lines include West Yorkshire Spinners, Erika Knight, Rico, Rowan and Stylecraft. And they have a selection of fabric, patterns, books and variety of classes and workshops to tempt you too.
Slipstitch will be open every day of the yarn crawl, including the Sunday and Monday when they are usually closed. They’re also opening late on Thursday, 5th September so you’ve no excuse not to go and say hello! GLYC passport holders will get 10% off all yarn and 5% off everything else. New lines are arriving in time for the yarn crawl so you’ll find plenty of goodies to tempt you!
Other special events happening during yarn crawl week include the shop’s regular Meet and Make session on the Thursday morning at 10:30am. Bring your current project and Slipstitch will provide the tea and biscuits! There’s also a beginners punch needle class with Zoe Bateman on Thursday evening and passport holders can get £5 off their ticket. And on Saturday the shop’s first class of their Knit Your First Sweater course kicks off.
Rosie and her team look forward to welcoming you to Slipstitch!
